Route

This created a wetlands landscape that is used by round 250,000 birds ever year and offers nesting grounds for 130 species of birds. A natural paradise for birds where 800 types of butterflies and even beavers also feel at home. There is also an extraordinary world of flora, with seldom types of plants, wild herbs and orchids. At the information centre, tours are on offer. Burghausen - Inn-Salzbach View We travel from Burghausen over the bridge to Hochburg/Ach in the direction of Überackern. After Überackern, the bike paths leads a bit away from the Inn and we travel a section in a bike lane and then arrive at the view point of the Salzach and Inn. High above the Salzach and Inn, you can observe the confluence of these two rivers. The view is really recommendable and a nicely shaded resting area is ideal for a stop-off. From the viewpoint of the Salzach and Inn, it’s only 1.2 kilometres to Ratzlburg. The section here again leads along the dam and right bank of the Inn. On the German side, you will also often see bikers. Inn-Salzach View - Ratzlburg At the Inn-Salzach viewpoint, our glance automatically falls on the sign reading “Archaeological Dig Ratzlburg - Bikers’ and Hikers’ Rest Area at a Historic Location”. It’s only 400 metres (can be travelled on bike) to our excursion destination. The actual dig, a fortress from the twelfth century, cannot be viewed and is closed. Nevertheless, there is a table in the same eight-corner form as the residential tower, including benches, for the visitors. An information sign gives interesting details about the mediaeval fortress. After viewing the area, we travel back to the Ratzlburg sign and then continue along the dam. Ratzlburg - Ranshofen Here, we travel to the Braunau “Riviera” (because of the gravel banks). Soon we see the quarry ponds of Simbach on the German side, which are very popular in the summer, especially amongst the young. Upon continuing, we cross the “Giessgraben” on a wooden bridge. It is an artificial waterbed where the rainwater from meadows at higher elevations come together and then flow into the Inn as a so-called “Giess”. The next rest area is offered by Putscher Inn, known for its cider and afternoon snacks. Those who have their snack along can stop right on the dam and take a break with a view of the Inn, since there is a table with benches. Ranshofen - Braunau Shortly before the Ranshofen barrage, we have to leave the dam and circumvent the power plant. If the weather is nice, you often see gliders from the airstrip in Kirchdorf in Bavaria. After the Ranshofen barrage, we can ride back on to the dam. We then pass the Braunauer Baumlehrpfad (Tree Education Path) before finally seeing the old city walls of Braunau. We travel along the Enknach below the Inn Bridge and take a right through the “Wassertor” (Water Gate) to ride up into the city. Braunau After viewing the historical commercial city of Braunau am Inn, our bike tour continues to Hagenau. With a look back at one of the most beautiful city squares of all the Inn-Salzach cities, we leave the square and ride right behind the Tax Authorities (Finanzamt), back through the Wassertor to the Inn and keep to the right. After only a few metres, you will discover how idyllic and close to nature this bike path is. To the right, the rests of our old city wall can be seen. Here, you bike right along the Inn. On the right side, you will find a little waterfall; the stone has the form of a face. There are loads of legends about it. (www.verborgene-heimat.at) Braunau- Riparian Landscape After about 1 kilometre, we have to leave the path along the Inn a bit, but take a settlement road with little traffic next to the Inn. You will pass a football stadium and then reach the most beautiful landscape on the section. Our trip begins on the dam and our view of the Inn is obscured for a short while by the lush riparian landscape. After a few hundred metres, a gravel road crosses our path. We take it and then cross the Mattig on a small bridge before riding back on to the dam. Nature Reserve The bike and hiking path leads along the natural reserve. Please do not leave the marked paths. You could destroy the flora and fauna. We ride along the dam through beautiful riparian landscapes towards the Hagenauer Bucht. To preserve and secure the function of the reservoirs on the Lower Inn as a nesting and resting area for aquatic birds, this part of the bay was added to the Unterer Inn Reserve. Hagenau - Aham Wonderful Hagenau Castle is located directly on an arm of the Inn and is definitely worth visiting! The castle is held privately and a wonderfully picturesque view is on offer. Located directly in the town of Hagenau, there is a biker-friendly inn on the left. Right behind it, our route continues towards Bogenhofen. But, first we come to a cider bar in Aham. If the weather is nice, you can sit outside and enjoy treats from the Innviertel. Once we have arrived in Bogenhofen, we stay to the left and reach Frauenstein, with its centuries-old building, Frauenstein Castle. Here, we can enjoy the wonderful nature along the Inn and take a break with lots of opportunities for stop-offs. You can also cross the Inn at the Frauenstein-Ering power plant, which stays open during the day especially for bikers and pedestrians. In Ering, there is an information centre with comprehensive information about the European reserve. Thanks to its reservoirs, this area offers Europe a unique habitat for birds. You can observe round 180 species of birds and sometimes even spot beavers. Simbach Finds from the Stone and Bronze Ages show that Simbach was settled a long time ago. It is the neighbour village of Braunau, on the Bavarian bank of the Inn. In addition to the artistically significant Gothic Mariä Himmelfahrt church in the quarter of Erlach, the town hall in Jugendstil style is also worth seeing.
